NETwork Against Malaria Art Contest Winners 2011!

Winners were chosen out of over 500 wonderful submissions based on the theme “Nets Work Against Malaria” from children grades Kindergarten-grade eight.
The art contest celebrated World Malaria Day, April 25, 2011.  World Malaria Day is a day to remember malaria victims and celebrate global efforts to control malaria.  The theme of this year’s World Malaria Day isAchieving Progress and Impact.  In honor of World Malaria Day 2011, the Weill Cornell Medical School Chapter of NETwork Against Malaria hosted their first annual art contest to help spread awareness of a disease that threatens nearly half the world population and claims the lives of nearly one million people every year.  Most of these are of young children living in sub-Saharan Africa.  However, malaria is preventable.. When mosquito nets are heavily used, malaria transmission can be cut by over 90%. Although nets can have a major impact, few families in sub-Saharan African have the ten dollars needed to purchase one.
NETwork Against Malaria is a national non-profit organization that raises money to purchase malaria bed nets for impoverished Ugandan families.  NETwork purchases and distributes malaria bed nets to Ugandan families, and educates and empowers American children about how to participate in life saving efforts to eliminate malaria.
The art contest educates children about mosquito nets and the people who need and use them.  The art contest worked to show children malaria and the needs of the Ugandan children.  NETwork Against Malaria worked to foster an appreciation of other cultures, and teach children how they can make a global impact.   For more information or to see winning posters(after June 20)  visit:http://networkagainstmalariaartcontest.blogspot.com.  For more information about NETwork Against Malaria visit: www.networkagainstmalaria.org .
